About Matthew

How it all began

Having purchased my first electric guitar at sixteen years old, I soon took the initiative to adapt the basic theoretical knowledge gained from my childhood piano lessons to guitar, gaining me the confidence and ability to join a local band to perform at birthday parties and provide guitar lessons to others in the neighbourhood.
During this time I had also ventured out into street performance in the Melbourne CBD, which solidified the direction of my career path into that of music by the time I turned 20.

Experience

Performing professionally in bands and as a solo artist, In 2009 my solo performances gained enough attention to secure an interview on the Metal Genesis show on PBS FM and compete in guitar battles on SYN FM.

As an avid composer, I am constantly engaged and immersed in musical thought, seeking and discovering new ways to express and interpret musical ideas as an integral part of my creative process.

My teaching experience goes back to my teen years where I offered guitar lessons in my local neighbourhood. Since then, I have provided lessons across multiple instruments at several schools, studios, and out of my own business.

Teaching style

Specialising in improvisation, composition, and musical literacy, it's my primary aim to inspire students and fellow musicians to joyfully create music with ease.

Catering to each student’s individuality and musical potential, I ensure that students of all levels are able to learn at a steady pace as they gauge their progress and build confidence to overcome any challenge.

Able to provide theoretical and technical training, students of all levels are enabled to pursue musical excellence, and allow their creativity to flourish.

Credentials

In 2026, I invented "Melbourne Music Theory". An intuitive framework for music theory that features a 7-line stave based on the chromatic scale as opposed to the traditional 5-line diatonic stave, a flexible yet simple approach to rhythmic dictation, an improvement upon the "Nashville Numbering" chord charting system, and much more.
